Arabic is a Central Semitic language with over 411 million native speakers and is known for being the language of Islam. Many of its words have been borrowed in other languages due to its major influence in culture, mathematics and philosophy. Being the third-most widespread official language, learning Arabic opens doors to a variety of opportunities in both business and academia.
JPLI's Arabic program offers you the opportunity to acquire skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Language instruction is proficiency-oriented and imparts cultural experiences and knowledge. This course places focus on Modern Standard Arabic during the classroom hours, with optional sessions offered in colloquial dialects such as Moroccan, Egyptian, and Syrian. Outside the classroom, you'll select from a wide array of in-language co-curricular activities, including calligraphy, cooking, cinema, music, and the Qur'an, each designed to help you build new vocabulary while developing cultural fluency.

Program Options
1. General / Non-Intensive:
Language courses offer eight 2-hour classes per section to be completed in 8 weeks. 2. Language and Dialect Course Offerings Our comprehensive course in Modern Standard Arabic will last eight weeks each session, with courses in basic and intermediate levels as well as spoken and heritage Arabic. 3. Advanced Arabic with a Focus on Grammar Our advanced Arabic courses for Arabic and Islamic studies provide graduate students with a distinct focus the grammar and writing skills for academic and research reading and writing. An additional fifty-minute period of conversation occurs outside of the class meeting time and is required of all students. |

Introductory Arabic
The introductory level of our Arabic program consists of four sections: ARA101, ARA102, ARA103, and ARA104. Each section lasts for a period of eight weeks. Students will have had 64 total hours of in-class instruction by the end of the four sections, preparing them for the intermediate level. It should take a student approximately 32 weeks to complete the entire introductory level of Arabic at JPLI.
This course aims to develop four essential language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with a particular focus on communicative competence. Additionally, basic concepts of Arab culture will be introduced. There are no prerequisites to enroll in this course. However, please note that this course is for students with little or no knowledge of Arabic, and therefore is not appropriate for native/fluent speakers of Arabic. Intermediate Arabic
Like the introductory level of our Arabic course, the intermediate level comprises of four sections: ARA201, ARA202, ARA203, and ARA204. Each section lasts for a period of eight weeks. Students will have had 64 total hours of in-class instruction by the end of the four sections, preparing them for the intermediate level. It should take a student approximately 32 weeks to complete the entire introductory level of Arabic at JPLI.
This course reinforces the foundational principles of Arabic grammar, expands vocabulary with more complex terms, and enhance sthe ability to actively use these words across a wide range of topics and contexts. As a middle-level course for learners, Intermediate Arabic exposes students to authentic reading and listening materials, covering grammar, vocabulary, and cultural themes. Students will develop the ability to discuss and write about various topics while gaining a deeper understanding of key aspects of the Arab world and its culture. Please note that a course placement interview is required for admission into the program. |
Advanced Arabic
The curriculum for advanced Arabic (ARA301 and beyond) is adapted to the specific students' needs, interests, and abilities. Students must first complete the entire intermediate track and/or demonstrate a higher level of proficiency in order to enroll in this level.
