ABOUT THIS COURSE
The Arabic program offers you the opportunity to acquire skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Language instruction is proficiency-oriented and imparts cultural experiences and knowledge. The focus will be on Modern Standard Arabic during the classroom hours, with optional sessions offered in colloquial dialects such as Moroccan, Egyptian, and Syrian. Outside the classroom, you'll select from a wide array of in-language co-curricular activities, including calligraphy, cooking, cinema, music, and the Qur'an, each designed to help you build new vocabulary while developing cultural fluency. Classes are small and you will benefit from individual attention inside and outside the classroom. COURSE OPTIONS
General / Non-Intensive: Language courses offer eight 2-hour classes per section to be completed in 4-8 weeks. Language and Dialect Course Offerings A comprehensive in Modern Standard Arabic will last eight weeks each session, with courses in basic, intermediate, as well as spoken and heritage Arabic. Advanced Arabic with a Focus on Grammar Our advanced Arabic courses for Arabic and Islamic studies graduate students have a distinct focus on the grammar and writing skills of the language for academic and research reading and writing. An additional fifty-minute period of conversation occurs outside of the class meeting time and is required of all students. |
The Introductory Arabic
The introductory Arabic course is divided into four sections, each consisting of eight 2-hour sessions, meeting once a week for a total of 32 weeks. The course focuses on mastering pronunciation, speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Topics covered include essential everyday situations such as self-introduction, describing the weather, transportation, visiting a doctor, and other fundamental conversational skills. |
Intermediate Arabic
The objectives of Intermediate Arabic are to reinforce the foundational principles of Arabic grammar, expand vocabulary with more complex terms, and enhance the ability to actively use these words across a wide range of topics and contexts. As a middle-level course for learners, Intermediate Arabic exposes students to authentic reading and listening materials, covering grammar, vocabulary, and cultural themes. Students will develop the ability to discuss and write about various topics while gaining a deeper understanding of key aspects of the Arab world and its culture. The course is divided into four sections, each lasting 32 weeks for a total of 64 hours, tailored to students' capabilities. |
