SPECIALTIES 

• Classes are held in-person, permitting for a direct connection with teachers and students.
• Classes are typically limited to three to five students per instructor, allowing for greater interaction and attention.
• Classes tend to be highly individualized and tailored to the students' needs and interests.
  
• The JPLI offers both short-term and long-term study trajectories for students. Students can improve their German in as short as eight weeks or develop an even higher level over several years.
• All instructors are native or near-native speakers of German.
• Students who achieve a score of eight-five or above may receive a certificate attesting to their proficiency in the language.

PROFICIENCY LEVELS 

• Introductory German -​ Number of sections: Four sections; Total number of classes: 32 classes; Total number of in-class hours: 64 hours.
• Intermediate German - Number of sections: Four or more sections; Total number of classes: 64 or more classes; Total number of in-class hours: 128 or more hours.
• Advanced German - Number of sections: Four or more sections; Total number of classes: 96 or more classes; Total number of in-class hours: 192 or more hours.

   Introductory German Language
       (GER101, GER102, GER103, GER104) 

Course Description:
The introductory level of our German course comprises of four sections: GER101, GER102, GER103, and GER104. Each section lasts for a period of eight weeks. Students will have had sixty-four hours of in-class instruction by the end of the four sections, preparing them for the intermediate level. It should take a student approximately thirty-two weeks to complete the introductory level of German at the JPLI.

​This course aims to develop four essential language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with a particular focus on communicative competence. Additionally, basic concepts of German culture will be introduced.

​Prerequisite: There are no prerequisites to this level.
​
Notes: This course is for students with little or no knowledge of German.
It is not appropriate for native/fluent speakers of German. More advanced students should see the program director at admissions office.

Learning Outcomes: 
​Upon completing this course, students will be able to:

• Understand and comprehend simple spoken statements, questions, conversations, and stories related to the topics covered in the course.
• ​Make and respond to simple statements and questions.
• Engage in basic face-to-face conversations using appropriate vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation for various communication situations.
• Write short, informal notes and messages.
• Generate short paragraphs on familiar topics using vocabulary and structures at this level.
• Read and understand authentic materials and texts related to the themes of the course.
• Describe essential aspects of German culture in comparison to American culture.
• Respond to cultural subtleties using appropriate language and register.

Intermediate German Language 
​(GER201, GER202, GER203, GER204)

​Course Description:
Intermediate German is designed for learners who have attained a basic level of proficiency and now desire to advance to a more complex language level.

Like the introductory level of our German course, the intermediate level comprises of four sections: GER201, GER202, GER203, and GER204. Each section lasts for a period of eight weeks. Students will have had at least 128 hours of in-class instruction by the end of the four sections, preparing them for the advanced level. It should take a student at least sixty-four weeks to complete the intermediate level of German at the JPLI. Students must first complete the entire introductory track and/or demonstrate a medium level of proficiency in order to enroll in this level.

​We may offer extra sections to students to better target their weaknesses and particular interests.

The curriculum for advanced German (GER301 and beyond) is adapted to the specific students' needs, interests, and abilities. Students must first complete the entire intermediate track and/or demonstrate a high level of proficiency in order to enroll in this level.
