PROFICIENCY LEVELS

Introductory German Language
(GER101, GER102, GER103, GER104) Course Description: The introductory level of our German course comprises of four sections: GER101, GER102, GER103, and GER104. Each section lasts for a period of eight weeks. Students will have had sixty-four hours of in-class instruction by the end of the four sections, preparing them for the intermediate level. It should take a student approximately thirty-two weeks to complete the introductory level of German at the JPLI. This course aims to develop four essential language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with a particular focus on communicative competence. Additionally, basic concepts of German culture will be introduced. Prerequisite: There are no prerequisites to this level. Notes: This course is for students with little or no knowledge of German. It is not appropriate for native/fluent speakers of German. More advanced students should see the program director at admissions office. Intermediate German Language
(GER201, GER202, GER203, GER204) Course Description:
Intermediate German is designed for learners who have attained a basic level of proficiency and now desire to advance to a more complex language level. Like the introductory level of our German course, the intermediate level comprises of four sections: GER201, GER202, GER203, and GER204. Each section lasts for a period of eight weeks. Students will have had at least 128 hours of in-class instruction by the end of the four sections, preparing them for the advanced level. It should take a student at least sixty-four weeks to complete the intermediate level of German at the JPLI. Students must first complete the entire introductory track and/or demonstrate a medium level of proficiency in order to enroll in this level. We may offer extra sections to students to better target their weaknesses and particular interests. Request: A placement test is needed. Please schedule a test here. Learning Outcomes: This course aims to assist you in attaining a high level of proficiency in the German language, allowing you to pursue educational opportunities in German-speaking countries, engage in advanced German studies within the United States, or utilize German for various purposes such as travel, leisure, and employment.
