The Korean Studies Program offers courses at various proficiency levels throughout the year, providing students with a range of academic options. The program focuses on reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, with an emphasis on proficiency and cultural knowledge.
Courses are structured into three proficiency levels—Introductory, Intermediate, and Advanced—aligned with the official Korean language standard (TOPIK). For more information, please see the details below for each level.

Introductory Korean
The Introductory Korean Program consists of eight 8-week sessions, categorized as Korean 101A, 101B, 101C, 101D, 102A, 102B, 102C, and 102D, for a total of 64 weeks and 96 hours of study.
Each course meets once a week for 90 minutes in a small in-person group, with 3-5 hours of homework per week. Key Skills Covered:

Intermediate Korean
Prerequisites
Must schedule an in-person placement meeting before accepted into the program. About the program The Intermediate Korean courses are designed for students who have completed the introductory level and wish to enhance their language proficiency. The course focuses on more complex sentence structures and grammar, while reinforcing the basics. Students will engage in balanced development across all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The program consists of 32 eight-week sessions, categorized as Korean 201, 202, 203, and 204, covering a total of 128 weeks of study. Each course meets once a week for 90 minutes in a small in-person group, with 3-5 hours of homework per week. Upon completion of this course, Students will meet the standard of TOPIK levels 3 to 4. |
Advanced Korean
This is a third-year course in modern Korean with emphasis on acquisition of advanced vocabulary and grammatical structure. Equal attention will be given to all four language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing and classical reading and writing Korean lecture, philosophy and other topics.
Prerequisites Students in this program must meet the proficiency standard of intermediate level. A course placement interview need to be scheduled. |
Korean for Exams
TOPIK Exam
TOPIK is the only official standardized test for Korean language proficiency for foreigners administered by the Korean government. The test results can be used for local university applications, as well as employment purposes. There are two levels to choose from: TOPIK I (Basic, Level 1-2) & TOPIK II (Intermediate & Advanced, Level 3-6). Teacher Certificate Program
Based on New York State Teacher Certification standards, students can enroll in the Teacher Certification Program to qualify for a New York State (NYS) Korean Language Teacher certification. Please contact the Admissions Office for more information. |
