Our Latin program offers introductory, intermediate, and advanced proficiency levels aligned with the standards set by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Program details
  • Classes are typically limited to three to five students per instructor, allowing for greater in-person interaction and attention.
  • Each section consists of eight two-hour sessions, held once or twice per week, and can be completed in either eight or four weeks. Upon completing the section, students can then enroll in the next level of that section.
  • Classes are taught by qualified and experienced Latin-language instructors.
  • Students who achieve a score of eighty-five or above may receive a certificate attesting to their proficiency in the language.​
  • Tuition is priced at 629 dollars per every completed section of sixteen in-class hours. There is a one-time sixty-five dollar registration fee.
  • The JPLI offers a three-percent tuition reward to students who score at least a ninety overall in their class, encouraging them to continue their language development.
  • Student internships or work study programs are available to qualified students.

Individuals who are interested in:
- Improving their Latin language skills through self-study or homeschooling.
- Exploring Latin language, culture, and history, regardless of age or educational level.
- Seeking a foundation that can also help improve their English for science projects and facilitate engagement with other Romance languages such as Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese, as well as other languages.
- K-12 students who want to earn academic credit for their future studies.

The intermediate Latin course is structured into four sections: Latin 201, Latin 202, Latin 203, and Latin 204. Within each section, there are four levels labeled A, B, C, and D. Each level encompasses eight two-hour sessions, held once a week over an eight-week period.

This course is suitable for individuals progressing from the beginners’ level or seeking to refresh their prior knowledge of Latin. Students are expected to have a solid understanding of the topics covered in introductory Latin. Throughout the course, students will engage with a variety of original Latin texts spanning different centuries and will develop their skills in writing in Latin.

​Key topics covered in this course include:
  • Understanding the meaning and uses of the subjunctive mood
  • Mastering the forms and natural meanings of the four participles
  • Exploring various uses of participles, including the ablative absolute

By the course's conclusion, students will:
  1. Understand the principles of the subjunctive mood in Latin
  2. Demonstrate proficiency in producing and working with the forms of the subjunctive
  3. Recognize numerous uses of the subjunctive and accurately render them in English
  4. Identify the sequence of tenses in Latin texts
  5. Produce the forms of the participles and understand their natural meaning in English
  6. Work with the ablative absolute and comprehend its relation to the entire sentence

Course Content: Students will focus on two main elements of Latin expression: the four participles and the subjunctive mood, exploring their respective usages. The forms and natural meanings of the four participles will be clearly presented, alongside their various usages, particularly in the context of the ablative absolute. Additionally, the principles of the subjunctive mood and its forms will be covered, along with its diverse usages to express purpose, result, circumstance, cause, concession, and characteristic. Relative expressions of each will also be examined.
