->>> Introductory French
Our introductory French program is divided into four sections (101, 102, 103, 104), each lasting eight weeks with two-hour sessions every week. The curriculum focuses on essential conversational, listening, writing, and reading skills. Students will explore important topics such as greetings, personal introductions, numbers, days of the week, months of the year, shopping, directions, and medical assistance. Basic grammar, including verb conjugations, will be extensively covered. After completing all four sections, students will have developed a solid foundation in communication skills that can be used within a French-speaking community. In addition, their skills will be equivalent to Novice High level or the A2-B1 levels of the CEFR's standard. |
->>> Intermediate French
Prerequisite(s) This course is open to students who have successfully completed the introductory 100 courses or otherwise demonstrated satisfactory proficiency in the language. The intermediate course comprises of four sections (201, 202, 203, and 204), altogether spanning 32 weeks of study. In the intermediate program, students delve deeper into French language and culture, with a focus on enhancing speaking, reading, and writing proficiency. They explore complex topics, engage in diverse language contexts, and analyze a wide range of texts from France and the French-speaking world. The curriculum includes daily assignments, quizzes, and screenings of relevant video materials. Upon finishing each level of the course, students will have the opportunity to take the TFI™ Test for various purposes, thereby showcasing their language proficiency. Upon completing this program, students' skills will be equivalent to the B1-B2 levels of the CEFR's standard. * Please note that a course placement interview is required for admission into the program. |
->>> Advanced French
Advanced French Course Overview: Prerequisite(s): This course is open to students who have fulfilled all the previous language requirements. Students transitioning to the advanced 300 courses should complete the 200 courses or otherwise demonstrate satisfactory proficiency in the language before enrolling in more advanced French courses. French 300 serves as a preparatory course for upper-level studies in French and Francophone studies. Structured around two thematic units--"La France d’hier" (The France of yesterday) and "La France d’aujourd’hui" (The France of today)—the curriculum offers a comprehensive exploration of French culture and society. In the first unit, students delve into the historical context of France during the German occupation, crafting memoirs from the perspective of a fictional character they invent. This exercise fosters a deeper understanding of France's past while honing creative writing skills. The second unit focuses on contemporary issues facing French youth, fostering discussions and correspondence with French college students. Through these exchanges, students gain insight into current French society and engage in intercultural dialogue, which is particularly beneficial for those considering studying abroad. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to explore themes of identity and cultural diversity within the context of French society. By engaging with both historical and contemporary perspectives, students develop a nuanced understanding of French culture while honing their language skills in a dynamic and interactive learning environment. This proficiency level describes an ability to communicate appropriately, sensitively, and capably while addressing unfamiliar topics. The language learner can recognize a wide range of longer, more demanding texts and understand their implicit meaning. They can typically express themselves without much need to pause and search for the correct expression. They can use this language for professional, social, and academic purposes, demonstrating a controlled use of organizational patterns and cohesive devices.
