SPECIALTIES

• Classes are typically limited to three to five students per instructor, allowing for greater in-person interaction and attention.
• Each section consists of eight two-hour sessions, held once or twice per week, and can be completed in either eight or four weeks. Upon completing the section, students can then enroll in the next level of that section.
• Classes are taught by qualified and experienced Spanish-speaking native or near-native instructors.
• Students who achieve a score of eighty-five or above may receive a certificate attesting to their proficiency in the language.
• The JPLI offers CEFR exam preparation courses to help students demonstrate mastery of various proficiency levels in Spanish.
• Tuition is priced at 629 dollars per every completed section of sixteen in-class hours. There is a one-time sixty-five dollar registration fee.
• The JPLI offers a three-percent tuition reward to students who score at least a ninety overall in their class, encouraging them to continue their language development.
• Student internships or work study programs are available to qualified students.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Intermediate Spanish (Spanish 200) is a four-section course that reviews and continues the material covered in Spanish 100.

Completion of this course fulfills the MAP foreign language requirements while introducing literary readings, short films, and other complex composition exercises. The course involves an integration of the four basic language competencies, which are listening, speaking, reading, and writing, in the aim to improve all-around communication in Spanish. Through this integrated approach, you will participate in a practical application of vocabulary, grammar, and culture to your advancement in the Spanish language. The course emphasizes mastery of language skills through specific contexts and relevant, conversational situations. By the end of the course, students will have read novels and literary texts, which will be used to review many of the grammatical points covered in the textbook and class work, to improve analytical thinking and literary criticism skills, and to verbally express opinions about the situations presented in the novel.

INTENSIVE TOPICS INCLUDE

• The development of intermediate conversational skills in relatable, everyday contexts.
• The correct use of past, present, and future conjugations with attention to tense, aspect, and mood.
• The correct use of prepositions to indicate time and location in a variety of contexts.
• The ability to form interrogative and exclamatory sentences with ease.
• Overall mastery of comparative and superlative forms.
• The basics of developing complex, multi-clause sentences in Spanish with enriched vocabulary and greater command of syntax.

LEARNING GOALS
By the end of this level, students should be able to:

• Talk and write about present, past, future, and unexpected or hypothetical events.
• Describe people, places, and situations, as well as distinguish effectively between the verbs of "ser" and "estar."
• Narrate and describe past events while adhering to the correct use of the preterite and imperfect tenses.
• Begin to develop a basic understanding of the subjunctive mood, and more!
